Okinawa, Japan - Nearly 100 Marines and guests recently visited the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program Far East School to watch an award ceremony and participate in a demonstration with Angi Uezu, an Okinawan grandmaster of Isshin-ryu karate. The Marines began with a 45-minute demonstration, displaying the martial arts skills they had learned in the Far East School. They showed various fighting techniques, including full- contact methods, open-hand strikes and weapons skills. "The Marines performed techniques from tan to black belt, encompassing the entire continuum of force for lethal and non-lethal techniques," said Master Sgt. Shane T. Franklin, director for MCMAP Far East School.
Although he is 79 years old and suffered a stroke in 1994, Uezu amazed the crowd with his rendition of an isshin-ryu kata. "His performance showed that good, hard training has a longterm impact on health and mental well-being," Franklin said. After their demonstration, the Marine Corps recognized Uezu for the 45 years he has taught service members. A certificate of appreciation was given to him by Col. Lee W. Freund, commanding officer for the Headquarters and Service Battalion, 3rd Marine Division.  Uezu has had a great impact on service members and civilians around the world. He has made 25 trips to the United States to teach and perform. He claims to have influenced more than 100,000 people in 18 countries.
Fort Lauderdale, Florida -  Hundreds of martial arts contestants recently gathered here to compete in the North American Grappling Association’s National Championship tournament. While most of the audience’s attention was focused on the adults, 7- year-old Hunter Uline was tearing up the flyweight division. He snagged both of the first-place trophies that were awarded in his division: one for the uniform category and one for the no uniform category. He won his semifinal and final matches with speed and agility, each time forcing his opponent into submission with a guillotine choke in less than a minute.
Back in December 2001, when he was just 6, Hunter became one of the youngest karate black belts in the United States after having completed more than 450 hours of training. A martial artist since the age of 3, he now works out four to six hours a week at Tiger Schulmann’s Karate in Clearwater, Florida, under the tutelage of Gary Hellman. Hunter’s dream is to represent the United States at the Olympics

San Francisco, California - The martial arts community was rocked by the death of kickboxing champion Alex Gong, (photo shown) who was shot during a road-rage confrontation here on August 1, 2003. He was training at his Fairtex Gym when he saw Rodger Wayne Chastain allegedly crashed into a green Jeep Cherokee into his vehicle, which was parked outside. The 30-year-old martial artist immediately ran to confront the fleeing driver despite being barefoot and wearing only shorts and boxing gloves.
Gong caught up with the driver at a busy intersection. The men began to argue, witnesses said, and the Muy Tai stylist smashed the driver’s side window. When the traffic light changed to green, Chastain allegedly shot him once in the chest at pointblank range and drove away. Gong was pronounced dead at the scene.
Indeed, he managed to evade authorities for several days until they found him holed up in a room at a local hotel on August 3, 2003. After a 12-hour standoff, Chastain, who had reportedly been hiding under a mattress, took his own life.

Hollywood, California - Fans of Angelina Jolie, the Tomb Raider video games and the martial arts were in for a treat when Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life was released July. Not only did the Academy Award-winning actress reprising her role as the intrepid archaeologist/explorer, but the movie also featured plenty of high-octane fight sequences guaranteed to please both martial artists and casual moviegoers.
Nikki Berwick, a third-degree black belt in tang soo do, prepared Jolie for her fight scenes in the film. Berwick’s own introduction to the martial arts in 1987 was serendipitous. When a friend wanted to learn self-defense, she went along to the classes with her.
"I wasn’t actually interested in the martial arts to start with," she recalls. However, the youngster’s previous gymnastics training gave her good coordination and balance. The friend quit after three months, but Berwick continued to train, eventually embarking on a 10-year stint on the tournament circuit. Now 24, she holds two kata world titles, six European titles and 25 British titles.
To prepare Jolie for the fights, Berwick trained her for an hour a day, five days a week for approximately two weeks. She also worked with Jolie when they were on location in Wales and Kenya filming action scenes. However, once the cameras started rolling, the sessions shrunk. At times, they were as brief as 20 minutes, she says. To make the most of their time together, Berwick had Jolie practice the difficult moves first, starting with the techniques and later introducing the choreography. "Then she could incorporate the more flashy moves into it," Jolie did most of her own stunts. "It’s a for-real kind of fighting. It’s believable. "She is brilliant. Some people are just so gifted, and Angelina’s one of them. She picks things up very quickly, and it made my life very easy to teach her."

Irvine, California - Tito Ortiz, one of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s most popular athletes, recently announced that he’s ready to fight and to continue fighting as long as possible. He just wants to get paid fairly.
Ortiz has brought in a new team to negotiate the deal for his next title defense. He’s now represented by X-treme Promotions of Irvine, California, and by lawyer Henry Holmes, who has worked with George Foreman, Oscar de la Hoya, Frank Shamrock and Hulk Hogan.
"Tito is an incredible athlete who is dedicated to giving fans more than what they pay for," said Glenn McCusker, president of X-treme Promotions. Ortiz insisted he’s anxious to step back into the ring to face the UFC’s top challengers. "I’m willing to fight anyone, especially Frank Shamrock, when the time is right," he said. "All I want is to provide for my family’s future. A fighter’s career is a short one, and I want to make sure I am treated and compensated fairly." paid fairly.

Saitama Super Arena in Japan -  Mike Zambidis a ball of energy. He has very fast hands and they aren’t pitty-pat show punches either. There’s real venom in them, just ask Albert Kraus who was decapitated earlier this year by one of those right hands. The greek drew a huge pop, having stoked the crowd with his highlight real in the way only a puncher can. Masato drew an even bigger pop. I didn’t realise how popular the little guys are. Lesson to all promoters: A good little guy can draw just as well as an average big guy. Zambidis is on his toes and looking for the big one, putting Masato under pressure from the bell. Masato is moving real fast too, working low kicks. Zambidis is timing a counter right hand over the low left kicks, looking for the shot that wrecked Kraus. He lands two early but not of the same calibre. He then goes to his left hook, ripping it high and low. Zambidis wasn’t hurt but he didn’t pop right back up the way guys do who’ve slipped. Masato presses the advantage and unloads but Mike swings right back at him. The TAGB squad proved exactly what it is that makes Britain ‘Great’ when they mixed it withthe top fighters from nine nations at Euro-Cup 2003 championships in Witten, Germany. Over two days, 4th and 5th October, team members took part in patterns, musical patterns, individual TKDI rules (full contact) sparring, TAGB (semi-contact) style sparring, two-team member sparring, and team sparring.
Clocking up as many as 14 fights per person, per day and fighting 3 minute rounds, the TAGB squad showed that its reputation for professionalism, high-quality performance and sheer grit is well foun-ded.
With far too many excellent performances to individually mention here TAGB fighters showed that their recent focus on TKDI style of fighting (i.e. body-armour, no gloves and no punches to the head) paid off.
Of all the top performers Jo Schembri had spectators and fellow competitors on their feet clapping with admiration in a spirited ending in the WTF final which saw him win the title by a hair-breadth fighting with a badly injured foot!
On the up and coming fighters side Quinton Oury for the men, and Amy Truesdale on the ladies’ side, respectively, showed they are the ones towatch. With fights sometimes going right to the wire and points being scored in the decisive last 10-15 seconds of the closing round the ETF 2003 Championships were rich in high drama and spirited performances.

Salvador, Brazil - Ibero-American Championships were held on June 9th, 2003.
Different competition - same result. The well-oiled Brasilian machine kept on rolling in impregnable fashion as the host nation coming close to a clean sweep of gold medals. In fact, in many ways, the Pan-American championships was an easier competition for the rest - they only had one Brasilian to contend with! But with as many as four home fighters in each category, Brasil won almost as many medals as the rest put together. Eleven golds out of a possible 16 and 27 medals out of a possible 57 - it was awesome stuff.
If anyone had thought this was going to be a chance to get an easy ride, the sight of World bronze medallist Sebastian Pereira and World Junior medallist Daniele Zangrando would have put paid to those pretty quickly. Pereira needed golden score to overcome Christiano Borges in one of four all-Brasilian finals in the under 73kg category. A slick Ouchi-gari that scored Yuko proved to be enough for the man who has had to watch the Camilo brothers, Tiago and Luiz, hinder his aspirations on both the domestic and international arenas since his bronze medal in 1999.
Zangrando may have missed out to Tania Ferreira for the Pan-Ams team but she succeeded where Ferreira failed, in beating Jessica Garcia of Puerto Rico in the under 57kg final. Zangrando took her over backwards for Waza-ari and then finished the job with Tate-shiho-gatame. Brasil’s women were enjoying far more success than the Pan-Americans team had and Catia Maia, under 52kg, Erica Moraes, under 63kg and Rosangela Conceicao, under 78kg, all made up for losing their places in the first team by winning gold. All three won silver medals in last year’s Pan-American tournament but did not make the team this time around. Juliana Kamashiro, under 44kg, and Luciana Satiko, under 70kg, made it six gold medals for Brasilian women with only Ecuador’s Carmen Chala, over 78kg, and Carlo Delgado of Peru, under 48kg, halting the deluge.
The Brasilian men could not quite match the women and won only five gold medals! Flavio Honorato made it a double golden celebration for his family by adding the under 81 kg title to his brother’s under 90kg Pan-Ams gold. Luciano Ribeiro edged out compatriot Leonardo Ferreira at under 100kg by Yuko and Fulvio Miyata produced a huge Ura-nage six seconds into golden score time to beat Alexandre Dae Lee to light up what had been a terrible final. Walter Santos made it a famous five with the heavyweight title, throwing the massive Venezuelan Douglas Cardoso for Ippon.
But the throw of the tournament did not come from a Brasilian - it did not even come from a Latin American for that matter. Spain’s Antonio Vilhena produced an incredible Koshi-guruma in the under 66kg final to completely level Brasil’s Leandro Cunha. Vilhena exploded into life and took him right over his head for a fantastic Ippon. Argentina’s
Emiliano Cassineri pleased his watching father, PJU Secretary Oscar Cassineri, by winning gold at under 55kg and his countryman Diego Rossati benefited from Gabriel Lama’s injury to take the under 90kg crown

Saitama, Tokyo - June 29 — Held at the Super Arena in Saitama, just north of Tokyo, the "Enter the Beast II 2003" was a Japan GP qualifying event. The card’s highlight, however, were the Team Beast vs Team Japan fights, presided over by team captains Bob "The Beast" Sapp and Nobuaki Kakuda. Although Sapp had predicted total victory for his fighters in the five bouts, Team Japan ended up winning the series by a score of 3-2. First to the qualifying fights (single match format, with winners advancing to the Japan GP Final. The first featured Tatsufumi Tomihira, whose frequent outbursts and general "bad boy" temperament have earned him the dubious title "Mr. Yellow Card." His opponent was Masahide Aoyogi, who showed some prowess with hooks in the second round to keep this one close. Otherwise, Tomihira had the advantage with quick low kicks and knees. One judge scored for Tomihira, but the other two called it a draw after three rounds. In the tie-breaking fourth, Tomihira was again the more aggressive fighter, and was rewarded with the victory. Nobu Hayashi and Tooru Ooishi fought a hard and fast fight — very fast in fact. Hayashi, who seems to be benefiting greatly from his training regiment at the Chakuriki Gym in Holland, just keeps looking stronger and stronger. Here, midway through the first, the smart fighter got in with a left straight punch and followed up with a quick right hook, and that was it for Ooishi, who could not beat the count. New Zealand fighter Toa (fighting for Team Japan out of respect for his friend, team captain Kakuda), said pre-fight: "I hope my opponent is ready, because I came to hunt, that’s what I’m going to do." And hunt he did. Toa’s prey, Manabu Nakanishi, lasted less than one round. What Toa lacked in technique he made up for with power, and it was a couple of hard roundhouses which scored the two downs to win the fight here. After the bout, Toa announced that he would not leave the ring until Sapp came forward. When Sapp obliged, Toa charged at him and both fighters had to be restrained. "I came 6,000 miles to be here, and now I want Bob Sapp!" howled Toa. The challenge was met when Sapp vowed to fight the Maori warrior this September. In the last of the Beast/Japan fights, Dutch superstar and three-time K-1 World GP Champion Peter Aerts sent the message that K-1’s old guard is not quite ready to pass the torch. Aerts brutalized opponent Tsuyoshi Nakasako, launching precise one-two-three combinations, and scoring a down in the first with a left punch to the midsection — the perfect body blow. Nakasako almost got something going in the second, but was outclassed here. Aerts scored another down with a kick to pretty much the same spot on Nakasako’s gut midway through the second, and finished him off soon afterwards with a high kick to the head. The "Enter the Beast II 2003" event drew 13,600 to the Saitama Super Arena, and was same-day broadcast nationwide on Nippon TV.

Hunde, China - Ving Tsun Museum curator Benny Meng participated in two events on November 8 and November 10, 2002 to honor the heritage of wing chun kung fu, the fighting style made famous by the late Bruce Lee.
The first event, a ceremony to open a hall of learning and remembrance in honor of the 20th century’s most famous wing chun teacher, was held here where the late Yip Man’s instructor once lived. More than 1,200 teachers and practitioners from around the world then assembled for the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony in Foshan, China, on November 9, 2002, making it the largest martial arts assembly of its kind in the city’s history. The ceremonies concluded the following day with demonstrations by students from wing chun schools around the world.
The Chinese government’s recent reconstruction and opening of the Southern Shaolin Temple in Putian was the second event honoring wing chun’s historic roots. Meng remained in Foshan two additional days to conduct research and to confer with other historians about the art’s ancestors and history. Among those who participated were the abbot of the Southern Shaolin Temple and the temple staff.
In honor of the occasions and in recognition of the Ving Tsun Museum’s role in publicizing the true history of wing chun as a Southern Shaolin system, the temple hosts presented Meng with two artifacts, which were then taken back to the museum in Dayton, Ohio. The first was a piece of pottery, and the second was a block from the original temple floor.
